Customer brought his own AC compressor for replacement on his 2018 Honda Civic 1.5T.
Installation is the same as other compressors from OEM or other aftermarket brands.
Our mechanic recycle the AC Freon ->remove old AC compressor ->install new AC
compressor -> leak test -> vacuum AC system -> fill Freon -> Test AC
Result
The system is performing excellently. With the fan on high and the temperature set to "LOW," the vents are pumping out air at 3.5°C or lower. The new compressor operates quietly and efficiently.
Pros & Cons: Bringing Your Own Compressor
While "Bring Your Own Part" (BYOP) is a popular way to save money upfront, it’s important to understand the risks involved with complex mechanical components like AC compressors.
Pros
Significant Upfront Savings: Reduces the immediate bill by roughly $300–$400 CAD.
Brand Control: Allows the customer to choose specific budget brands found online.
Cons
Zero Labor Protection: If the Amazon compressor fails in the future, the customer must pay the $580 installation fee again to replace it.
Warranty Hassle: The customer is responsible for shipping the faulty part back to the online seller for a refund/exchange.
Comparison: Shop-Sourced vs. Customer-Sourced Parts
Deciding whether to bring your own parts involves a trade-off between immediate savings and long-term protection.
Feature | Shop-Sourced Aftermarket | Customer-Sourced (e.g., Amazon) |
Average Cost | $900 – $1,000 CAD | $580 CAD (Labor & Gas only) |
Warranty | 1-Year Full Warranty (Parts & Labor) | No Warranty provided by the shop |
Included Extras | New cabin filter included | Installation & Recharge only |
Risk Factor | Low; shop handles any part failures | High; customer pays labor again if part fails |
